[How to] Tackling Screen Resolution Problems in Linux

Bharath | October 26th, 2008 - 10:00 am

Many of us may feel screen resolution as the biggest pest in any OS. If we don’t get the screen resolution we want we get real fed up with the UI (dont we?). Personally, I very much hate if screen resolution gets screwed up and also have faced a lot of problems on that.

So I thought I would make a post on the common problems I faced in ubuntu and I hope it would be useful for other distros too.

[How to] Fix “Home Directory should be accesible only by the user” — Warning Message during login

Bharath | October 25th, 2008 - 12:14 pm

I just encountered this problem recently so I thought I would drop a short note about it. Once I was trying to mount ext3 filesystems with read and write support and I, by mistake, did chmod my entire root partition as 775.

In this process, I made a warning message appear everytime I login, saying something like the home directory should be accessible by only its owner and should be set to 644. In addition, it also said that the file “$HOME/.dmrc” should be blah blah blah.

First, I made my home directory into 644. Then it won’t let me login saying it was not able to access my home directory. If I set it to 755 then that damn warning message I mentioned earlier reappears (What do I do?). Then what i doubted was that “.dmrc” file.

WHAT TO DO?

I just set the permission of “$HOME/.dmrc” to 644 , leaving rest to be in775 and it worked like a charm. I now am able to login and no warning message appears.

I hope this will help you too.

[Editors note: Here's a good example of why you should not mess with user permissions and chmod/chown commands if you have no idea what they do]

Pre-order your Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 CD’s!

Sathya | October 23rd, 2008 - 9:05 pm

With just few days ago to Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) ShipIt – Canonical’s service of sending Ubuntu CDs FREE of cost to your doorstop has now started accepting pre-orders for delivery requests of Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (Ubuntu 8.10). You can order either the Desktop edition or the server edition, and it will be delivered FREE of cost to you(yes, you don’t even have to pay for shipping).
Preorder Ubuntu

Although Canonical states delivery can take upto 10 weeks – I’ve generally received them here in India with 3 weeks. Although the default request is that of a single CD, by placing a special request, you can order any number of CDs – though I suggest against this – instead, order a single CD, and make copies of it yourself and distribute it!

[How to] Setting up Frontech Tv Tuner in Linux

Bharath | October 22nd, 2008 - 10:00 am

Continue I am personally a Frontech tv tuner user. I dont currently use it now but i was using in the past. I faced hell a lot of problems to get it working. It was sheer luck that i ran into the info here which saved me!!!! Thanks to Mann.

Here’s an excerpt from it

13/06/07- I cannot install my TV tuner card in fedora (this problem is irrelevant to my project, but i want it to be solved)

Causes:
Its a cheap card and manufacture didn’t provide the sufficient information on its EEPROM. So fedora cannot recognize it automatically and hence driver is not loaded.

Solutions tried

  1. From internet and using the commands dmesg and lspci -v, i was able to figure out that it is saa7130 chip based card.
  2. The thing to do here is to figure out the card type and tuner number by yourself and load the modules But in fedora there are 108 cards with different tuner number number. The last tuner number I tried was 71 and the list was more than 71 I think. So I sticked to card number 3 and tried different variations of tuner number from 1 to 71.

Sathya | October 21st, 2008 - 11:14 pm

KDE commnunity recently launched a dedicated forum over at forum.kde.org

The forum will complement the already existing and pretty exhaustive KDE User Base for support and other resources. Having a dedicated forum for a desktop environment is a really good thing, it should help users get help right from the horse’s mouth.

The forums include sections like News, Tips, How-to’s, Releases, Commits, Look and Feel, Localization and lot more!.

So if you’re having trouble with KDE, just drop by KDE forums, and post away!

Create a Fedora Bootable USB Pen/Flash Drive Easily using liveusb-creator

Sathya | October 17th, 2008 - 12:26 am

LiveCDs are a great way to try out (new) Linux distros on your system.

Unfortunately CDs get scratched pretty easily, and can turn into a coaster pretty soon.

With prices of USB pen drives at rock bottom, they’re probably the best way to try out LiveCDs. Generally its not that easy to make a bootable LiveCD using USB pen/flash drives. If you’re a Fedora lover then here’s a very easy way to create a bootable USB pen drive.
