While going through some of KDE settings I found this simple way to enable Anti Aliasing for Fonts (also known as ClearType in Windows). This will definitely make your fonts more pleasing to look at.
For this, just launch KDE settings – this is generally known as Configure Desktop in openSUSE or System Settings in Kubuntu.

The folks behind openSUSE have released the next version of the extremely popular (and my favorite) Linux distro – openSUSE.
openSUSE 11.1 comes with KDE 4.1.3, GNOME 2.24.1, and for those who (still) don’t want to shift to KDE 4, yes openSUSE 11.1 comes with KDE 3.5.10
You can download openSUSE via HTTP, FTP or via BitTorrent, just head over here.
Well recently I’d bought an external 750GB USB hard disk, as I was running out of space on my laptop. Now this drive requires an external power source, so I just cant lug it everywhere with my laptop in my room so I thought I’ll connect this to my other laptop, and share the drive (the other laptop is my office one, runs on Windows) and I could access this drive over WiFi. While accessing the drive contents via Dolphin was pretty easy thanks to the smb kparts (ie, to access just type smb://<ip-address>/<share-name> oh btw this works in Gnome 2.23 as well) trying to access the drive in Amarok via smb kparts would result in Amarok crashing. Hence I decided to mount it. I was sorta stuck, as I read the man pages for mount which mentioned smbfs is available but then mount kept throwing ‘unknown filesystem type smbfs”.
The holidays are upon us
‘t is the season to be jolly, and Wade Olson has come up with some amazing Christmas wallpapers with a distinct KDE flavour.
After couple of years of development, Amarok 2 finally hit the release mark, yup Amarok 2.0 was officially released today.
Amarok 2.0 has received a total overhaul, with complete KDE4 integration, including use of KDE4 foundations like Phonon, & Plasma. Also a major change with Amarok 2, the use of MySQL as the sole backend database choice. Amarok 2.0 also has a redesigned interface, with them dropping the “Excel” style playlist. I’ve been using Amarok 2.0 since its second beta and have found it really good. One of the striking features of Amarok 2.0 is that the “Suggested songs” feature, which had to be enabled manually before, is now eabled by default. Suggested songs basically retrieves songs similar to what you’re playing right now, from last.fm and then automatically queues the songs available on your local hard drive.
Well I’d just shifted to Fedora couple of days ago, and yesterday I’d applied the latest updates. Later on I thought I’ll explore the system a bit and decided to use the package manager KPackageKit (I’m on KDE). KPackageKit though, was not returning any packages. I thought I might have screwed up KPackgeKit, so I installed the Gnome version of PackageKit. Only then I realized, that something was wrong.
PeerGuardian 2, is an awesome IP filtering software. Though its FOSS, it there isn’t a Linux port of it yet. But don’t worry, if you’re using KTorrent, you can make use of PeerGuardian’s filters. Let me show how you can do so.
Consider this: you want to be informed of the latest breaking news. Sure you can use RSS readers but you probably don’t want to open another browser window/tab for that. Kunal Gautam has come up with a script which pulls in data from a RSS feed periodically and displays the latest news.
Check out here to see for the instructions and code for the script
