Just install mysql, and you should be rocking to music on Amarok again

For this, just launch KDE settings - this is generally known as Configure Desktop in openSUSE or System Settings in Kubuntu.

From there, Under Look & Feel, Click on Appearance. Navigate to Fonts, and under use Anti-Aliasing, choose Enabled from Dropdown box

So you might be asking, is it really that big-of-a-deal? Does it matter? The answer is YES! Do check out the pictures below, that taken with and without Anti-aliasing! The differences are pretty obvious.

Without AntiAliasing

With Anti Aliasing

Pretty awesome eh?

Well recently I’d bought an external 750GB USB hard disk, as I was running out of space on my laptop. Now this drive requires an external power source, so I just cant lug it everywhere with my laptop in my room so I thought I’ll connect this to my other laptop, and share the drive (the other laptop is my office one, runs on Windows) and I could access this drive over WiFi. While accessing the drive contents via Dolphin was pretty easy thanks to the smb kparts (ie, to access just type smb://<ip-address>/<share-name> oh btw this works in Gnome 2.23 as well) trying to access the drive in Amarok via smb kparts would result in Amarok crashing. Hence I decided to mount it. I was sorta stuck, as I read the man pages for mount which mentioned smbfs is available but then mount kept throwing ‘unknown filesystem type smbfs”.

Anyways after some Googling I mounted using CIFS, the command would be

mount.cifs //<host-or-ip-address>/<share-name> <path-to-mount>

If the share requires authentication just add
-o user=<user-name>
to the above line. You will be prompted for password, just enter it, and the share will be mounted.

If you want a graphical tool, you can check out SMB4k

Smb4k

After couple of years of development, Amarok 2 finally hit the release mark, yup Amarok 2.0 was officially released today.

Amarok 2.0 has received a total overhaul, with complete KDE4 integration, including use of KDE4 foundations like Phonon, & Plasma. Also a major change with Amarok 2, the use of MySQL as the sole backend database choice. Amarok 2.0 also has a redesigned interface, with them dropping the “Excel” style playlist. I’ve been using Amarok 2.0 since its second beta and have found it really good. One of the striking features of Amarok 2.0 is that the “Suggested songs” feature, which had to be enabled manually before, is now eabled by default. Suggested songs basically retrieves songs similar to what you’re playing right now, from last.fm and then automatically queues the songs available on your local hard drive.

Amarok 2 isn’t quite complete though, some of the glaring shortcomings include lack of support for an equalizer, and no queuing facility available yet. Visualization support is missing - though visualizer is not something which I use at all, so this doesn’t bother me much. The OSD is as of now, not customizable at all. There aren’t any useful scripts, to add to the problems, Amarok 1.4’s scripts cannot be used with Amarok 2.0. Despite these Amarok 2.0 is pretty awesome, it shouldn’t be too long before we see some excellent scripts for Amarok 2.0.

Well I’d just shifted to Fedora couple of days ago, and yesterday I’d applied the latest updates. Later on I thought I’ll explore the system a bit and decided to use the package manager KPackageKit (I’m on KDE). KPackageKit though, was not returning any packages. I thought I might have screwed up KPackgeKit, so I installed the Gnome version of PackageKit. Only then I realized, that something was wrong.

On querying for a package I got this error:

failed to get a TID: A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface “org.freedesktop.PackageKit.Transaction” member “GetUpdates” error name “(unset)” destination “org.freedesktop.PackageKit”)

Googled for this error, and immediately came to know lot more people were facing the same problem, and its because of a dbus security update: This update modifies the config file to reject all requests coming from packagekit, and hence KPackageKit wasn’t returning any packages. Atleast Gnome-PackageKit returned the error message, if I hadn’t tried that(gnome-packagekit) I wouldn’t know what the problem was!
Anyways a temporary fix is mentioned here. If it isn’t too clear, edit
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/org.freedesktop.PackageKit.conf
to include

<allow send_interface="org.freedesktop.PackageKit.Transaction"/>

in the file after
<policy context="default">

ie, the file should look like this now

<!DOCTYPE busconfig PUBLIC
"-//freedesktop//DTD D-BUS Bus Configuration 1.0//EN"
"http://www.freedesktop.org/standards/dbus/1.0/busconfig.dtd">
<busconfig>

<!– This configuration file specifies the required security policies
for the PackageKit to work. –>

<!– Only user root can own the PackageKit service –>
<policy user=”root”>
<allow own=”org.freedesktop.PackageKit”/>
</policy>

<!– Allow anyone to call into the service - we’ll reject callers using PolicyKit –>
<policy context=”default”>
<allow send_interface=”org.freedesktop.PackageKit”/>
<allow send_interface=”org.freedesktop.PackageKit.Transaction”/>
</policy>
</busconfig>

Hope that helps.

EDIT: As Janus & MH mention, do reboot the system or restart the dbus service for changes to take effect.

Launch KTorrent. Click on On Settings -> Configure KTorrent . Click on Plugins and ensure that IP FIlter is checked

Now Click on Apply. Next on the sidebar, scroll down and click on IP Filter. Click on the checkbox next to “Use PeerGuardian Filter”. Next just click on Download/Convert. It might take a minute or two for the list to be loaded and converted to a format KTorrent can understand.

Next Click on Apply and OK. There you go, you’re done. KTorrent now will make use of PeerGuardian’s filters.
