[How-to] Solve Partitions not detecte...

It has been quite a while since I wrote here. Did not find time nor issues to write about. I tried to install Ubuntu 10.10. The Partition Manager did not detect my partitions. It listed my entire hard disk as one “Unallocated Free Space”. I was puzzled. Everything was fine under Windows XP. Or so […]

Ubuntu Natty to skip changelogs

Due to the continuous demand for downsizing both our installation media, as well as the install footprint, we looked for packages which we should eliminate  […], but also for stuff that users generally don’t need and won’t miss. IMO package changelogs very much fall into the latter category, so they were very high on the “first against the wall” […]

Speed Up apt-get Downloads in Debian ...

Enter apt-fast. apt-fast is an apt-get supplement/replacement script by Matt Parnell. Basically apt-fast does pretty much the same thing as apt-get does, except that the download part of it is handled by axel. The result being that your program installation downloads finish faster. Is Oracle trying to kill VirtualBox? ...

It seems Oracle is hellbent on destroying whatever good Sun had done to the Open Source Ecosystem. The latest product to get the axe seems to be none other than the Flagship Virtualization program xVM VirtualBox. [….] All tests show that VirtualBox 3.2 lacks any semblance of stability, crashing any operating system running on it […]

openSUSE’s software manager lis...

I’ve been using openSUSE for quite some time now, but this is definitely the first time that I’ve noticed this ( though probably because I tend to use zypper or the 1-click install rather than entering YaST). Edit: Output of zypper lr -u Output of zypper se -s -i -t pattern Output of […]

Changing file associations and defaul...

A quickie: I wanted to change the default application from Banshee/Totem for my media files to VLC ( since I didn’t have proprietary codecs installed, and VLC does). Searched all of YaST/Settings and couldn’t find where to change the default application.
