As mentioned openSUSE 11.2 is now available. If you’re on previous versions of openSUSE you can do an inplace upgrade to 11.2 by using zypper.

Just change the repos to mention 11.2 instead of 11.0/11.1, as shown in the pic:
I updated my KDE 4 installation to KDE 4.2 couple of days ago, and everytime I restart, KDE and Akonadi would throw me an error about MySQL server not being installed. Akonadi is the suite in KDE 4.2 – and I don’t use it – and sure as hell don’t want to install a MySQL database server just for this. So I decided to get rid of Akonadi – just fire up your package manager and uninstall it. It would probably remove the entire KDE PIM package – but meh, I’m good with that.
Specifically in Sabayon, open the terminal, switch to root using
su root
and hit enter.
Next type
equo remove akonadi
That’s it.
Couple of days ago I’d posted about KDE 4.2 being released. As much as I wanted to upgrade KDE 4.2, I couldn’t do so immediately as it was not available in official Repos, the community repos had the RC version. Everyday I would do a equo search kde-meta hoping that I’d see the KDE 4.2 branch, and guess what it was available today 
Bang of the release schedule, the next version of Ubuntu, Ubuntu 8.10 dubbed the Intrepid Ibex was released on October 30th.

The good people over at WordPress released WordPress 2.6.2 today. And unlike the previous 2.6.1 release, this release is a mandatory release, to fix a loophole which occurs if your blog has registrations open.

If you allow open registration on your blog, you should definitely upgrade. With open registration enabled, it is possible in WordPress versions 2.6.1 and earlier to craft a username such that it will allow resetting another user’s password to a randomly generated password. The randomly generated password is not disclosed to the attacker, so this problem by itself is annoying but not a security exploit. However, this attack coupled with a weakness in the random number seeding in mt_rand() could be used to predict the randomly generated password.
Certainly seems a very important reason to update to 2.6.2. And if you find the process of upgrading WordPress blog a pain, here’s an effortless way of doing it.
WordPress follows the Open Source policy of release early, release often. While this is a pretty good thing – you get fast releases to security exploits and loads of new features – but updating can be a rather problem, especially so if its something as important as your site’s CMS.

The Debian project is pleased to announce the second update of its stable distribution Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (codename etch). This update mainly adds corrections for security problems to the stable release, along with a few adjustment to serious problems.
Please note that this update does not constitute a new version of Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 but only updates some of the packages included. There is no need to throw away 4.0 CDs or DVDs but only to update against ftp.debian.org after an installation, in order to incorporate those late changes.
Those who frequently install updates from security.debian.org won’t have to update many packages and most updates from security.debian.org are included in this update.
New CD and DVD images containing updated packages and the regular installation media accompanied with the package archive respectively will be available soon at the regular locations.
Upgrading to this revision online is usually done by pointing the aptitude (or apt) package tool (see the sources.list(5) manual page) to one of Debian’s many FTP or HTTP mirrors. A comprehensive list of mirrors is available at:

Debian-Installer Update
The installer has been updated to use and support the updated kernels included in this release. This change causes old netboot and floppy images to stop working; updated versions are available from the regular locations.
Other changes include stability improvements in specific situations, improved serial console support when configuring grub, and added support for SGI O2 machines with 300MHz RM5200SC (Nevada) CPUs (mips).

The Ubuntu developers are moving very quickly to bring you the absolute latest and greatest software the Open Source Community has to offer. Hardy Heron Alpha 2 is the second alpha release of Ubuntu 8.04, and with this new alpha release comes a whole host of excellent new features.
Note: This is still an alpha release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released in April 2008.

To upgrade from Ubuntu 7.10, run “update-manager -d” using the update-manager package from gutsy.
The latest Xorg is available in Hardy, Xorg 7.3, with an emphasis on better autoconfiguration without config files.
Alpha 2 includes the 2.6.24-2.4 (2.6.24-rc5-based) kernel. This brings in significant enhancements and fixes that have been merged in the last few months into the mainline kernel. Among these is the introduction of dynticks support for amd64, bringing the same power savings already available on 32-bit systems to 64-bit laptops and desktops.

Rudd- has written in his blog about Distribution X downloading oh-so-many updates, everyday. He says:
For the last six months, I’ve been reading article after article spewing the same bovine manure: Look at how many updates Distribution X issued! How can it be more secure than Windows? Let’s bury that stupidity under a ton of facts:
Microsoft shills’ latest tune goes something like this: “but Linux is so much more insecure than Windows — just look, every day you see security updates released!”.
True: open up your Linux distribution’s update manager after three months of not upgrading, and you will see quite the list. Probably a bit more than your Windows or Mac OS X updates.
But only a minority are security updates. From that minority, only a handful apply to your scenario. And even so, the number of updates is of no consequence. As a matter of fact, you should be happy you have all these updates for you to install.
Don’t just take my word for it — let’s explore why.
When you update your Linux system, you’re not just updating the operating system, but system services, libraries, applications and artwork as well. In a modern Linux distribution, you can expect about a thousand quarter-of-a-megabyte discrete applications (packages), instead of ten monolithic applications.
